│ Welcome to ASAP! │
└──────────────────┘
ASAP! is an easy-to-use workgroup productivity system designed specifically
for Novell Networks. You'll find lots of features to help your users get
the most of your state-of-the-art network system. ASAP! contains such office
productivity features as private and shared Rolodexing, calendaring and
scheduling, to-do lists, user-to-user and group chat, network utilities and
much more.
While ASAP! is an industry-standard MHS application, you do not need to own
Novell's MHS in order to benefit from the program. If you need only to send
phone messages and share data within your physical location on the same file
server, ASAP! can deliver messages all by itself, eliminating the need for
gateways or dedicated servers. In other words, everything you need to get
started using ASAP! is in one box.
If you add MHS capabilities to your network in the future, ASAP! instantly
becomes a global messaging system, compatible with Novell's SMF-70 and SMF-71
standards. This means you'll be able to send telephone messages and schedule
calendar events on other e-mail systems or networks.

│ Installation │ Page 1
└──────────────┘
You must be a SUPERVISOR or equivalent install ASAP!.
1. Create a directory anywhere on a shared network volume, then make it
the current directory. Use a volume that has the most space and/or
has the least amount of traffic. Plan on using about 500 Kbytes per
user (1/2 Megabyte) for a mature installation.
If you are upgrading from an older version of ASAP!, see the section
"Upgrading From Older Versions" in this document for important
information.
2. Grant sufficient trustee rights to the new directory to those you
want to be able to run the program. Users need all rights, except
Supervisor and Access Control/Parental (See SYSCON).
3. Copy the contents of the ASAP! diskette into the new directory
created in step 1. For example: COPY A:\*.* F:\ASAP!
4. Run the ADMIN program from the directory created in step 1. You will
be prompted to create a new installation. Follow the steps to completion.
You will create a master User List and desktop for each user when complete.
5. Run the ASAP!.EXE program with the following optional parameters:
/R Run ASAP! as a TSR, or Resident program. The
default Hot Key is <Alt>+<Ins>.
/W Install a Windows-compatible mouse
(Use if you run ASAP! in a DOS window)
/MHS:(path) Specifies the location of the MHS server directory. The
\MHS is assumed in the string, so you do not need to
specify it. For instance, if MHS is installed on H:\MHS,
you can use: /MHS:h:
/H:(server) Specify an MHS HUB name instead of default server name
obtained from the workstation environment. This is
required only if your "home" MHS Hub name is different
than your default physical server name.
/PATH:(path) Location of ASAP! server directory. This should
point to the directory created in step 1. You must
specify this option if you run the ASAP!.EXE program from
a local hard disk or any location other than the main
file server directory.
/SWAPPATH:(path) Write any temp files to specified path. Temp files may
be created if your workstation has less than 2M RAM and
are running ASAP! in TSR mode. This should
point to a local directory for optimal performance.
6. ASAP! installation Complete! See the remainder of this document
to see how you can integrate ASAP! with your network.
┌─────────────────────────────────────┐ Page 2
│ Upgrading from Older ASAP! Versions │
└─────────────────────────────────────┘
If you are upgrading from a release of ASAP! prior to 2.0, you need to
obtain the UPGRADE kit. You can obtain this program by calling the
Devont Software BBS at (409) 788-7771. Do not attempt to install the new
version on top of the old ASAP! data. The Upgrade program will update your
copy of ASAP! while retaining all user data.
┌──────────────────────┐
│ The ASAP! Batch File │
└──────────────────────┘
The sample batch file below is an example of loading ASAP! as a TSR
program. Note the use of DOS' EXIST command to verify the existance of a
temporary swap directory, and deletes any files if they exist in the directory.
┌───────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ Example ASAP!.BAT │
├───────────────────────────────────────────┤
│ @echo off │
│ map root m:=sys:apps\ASAP! >>nul │
│ c: │
│ if not exist c:\temp\*.* md c:\temp │
│ if exist c:\temp\*. del c:\temp\*. │
│ cd\temp │
│ m:ASAP! /r /path:m: /swappath:c:\temp │
└───────────────────────────────────────────┘
Note that you should never load a TSR program from Novell's login script.
Instead, have the login script exit to a batch file with the command:
EXIT "z:ASAP!.BAT"
┌────────────────────┐
│ The ASAP! Variable │
└────────────────────┘
If you do not want to type the startup parameters for ASAP! each
time, create a DOS environment variable to contain all startup parameters.
From a DOS prompt or batch file:
SET ASAP!=/path:m: /swappath:c:\temp /r
From a Login Script:
DOS SET ASAP!="/path:m: /swappath:c:\temp /r"
Using an environment variable allows you to place a copy of ASAP!.EXE
into a public directory (such as SYS:PUBLIC) and run ASAP!
from any directory simply by typing ASAP! at the DOS prompt.
┌─────────────────────┐ Page 3
│ Resident (TSR) Mode │
└─────────────────────┘
ASAP! can optionally be made to operate in TSR mode simply by
supplying a startup parameter on the command line. If the "/R" parameter
exists on the command line, ASAP! will load as a TSR program. Then,
you'll be able to press ASAP!'s hot key while working in other
programs, and have it pop up right on top of your work in progress. When
you are finished with ASAP!, another press of the hot key will
return you to the exact place you left off.
The ASAP! TSR takes up about 19K low DOS RAM. This kernal cannot
be loaded into high memory using the LH command. You should load
ASAP! after any other TSR programs when possible.
If you load ASAP! as a TSR program, you should have at least 2
megabytes of total system memory. Your CONFIG.SYS file should contain a
memory manager such as HIMEM.SYS and EMM386.EXE. If you do not know how
to configure 386 workstation memory, please consult your DOS manual. While
we use the the following CONFIG.SYS on PC-compatible workstations running
DOS 5.0 and higher, your needs may differ slightly.
┌───────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ Example CONFIG.SYS │
├───────────────────────────────────────────────────────┤
│ shell=c:\dos\command.com /e:512 /p │
│ device=c:\dos\himem.sys │
│ devicehigh=c:\dos\emm386.exe noems frame=e000 │
│ devicehigh=c:\dos\ansi.sys │
│ dos=high,umb │
│ files=40 │
│ buffers=40 │
└───────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
┌──────────────────────────┐
│ Special Group Membership │
└──────────────────────────┘
ASAP! allows members of the network group "ASUPER!" special access
priviledges throughout the program. You should make yourself a member of this
group, as well as others who you would like to be able to create Group Folders,
Group Calendars and Group Address Books.
┌──────────────────────────┐
│ The /SWAPPATH: Parameter │
└──────────────────────────┘
During normal operation, ASAP! creates temporary work files for
various functions. If you do not specify the /SWAPPATH: parameter on
the command line or in the ASAP! environment variable, ASAP!
will create these files in the directory in which ASAP! was
started.
If users start the program from a drive/directory in which they do not
have sufficient WRITE rights, these files will not be able to be written
and the program may fail. Make sure users start the program from a
directory in which they have sufficient rights (like their home directory),
or use the /SWAPPATH: parameter to specify a local disk (preferred) or
network directory in which they have sufficient rights.
┌────────────┐ Page 4
│ Speed Tips │
└────────────┘
By far, the most significant item in ASAP!'s startup parameters is
the /SWAPPATH: parameter. This item dictates where the temporary files
will be written to. If this parameter is not specified on the command
line or in the ASAP! environment variable, ASAP! will write them into
the current directory. Obviously, if the temp files are written to a
network drive, ASAP!'s speed will be affected by the network load and
network drive access time.
Since ASAP! uses a dynamic memory architecture known as Overlaying,
it frequently accesses the ASAP!.EXE file. If the ASAP!.EXE file
resides on the file server, program access time will be affected by
the network load and network drive access time.
You can siginificantly speed up ASAP! with the following tips:
+ Specify a RAMDRIVE as the /SWAPPATH: location. If using
MS-RAMDRIVE.SYS, use the /A or /E parameters to load the entire
Ram disk in XMS or EMS memory.
You can test for the existance of a Ram drive with a batch
command such as:
set swap=f:\users\%login_name%
if exist d:\PRN set swap=d:\
set asap!=/path:m: /swappath:%swap%
+ Use a Disk Cache for your local hard disk, such as MS' SMARTDRV.EXE.
This will greatly improve workstation performance.
+ Run the ASAP!.EXE program from a local disk drive.
┌──────────────────┐
│ Using UNLOAD.EXE │
└──────────────────┘
Use UNLOAD.EXE to remove the resident portion of ASAP! from
memory. Use caution when unloading ASAP! If you unload the
resident portion of the program and it was not the last TSR loaded,
or you are shelled out to DOS in another application, your workstation
will probably become unstable. Data loss can occur.
┌──────────────┐ Page 5
│ Registration │
└──────────────┘
By default, ASAP! operates in Demonstration mode. This mode allows
you to create telephone messages no longer than 5 lines, limits the number
of Address Book and Calendar entries, and displays a notification of this
fact every 10 or so minutes. Attempts to add text to a message that would
exceed the 5 line limit will fail. This includes block operations such
as Cut & Paste, etc.
When you have decided ASAP! is the package for you, call us for a
a live activation key. With this activation key, all demonstration
limitations are removed and the program no longer displays any notification.
You will then receive a standard package from us, including the latest
version of the program, manuals, additional print forms and mailing label
formats, warranty and license agreements, BBS access, and
1 year free technical support.
